MIddleton Lakes - 12th March 2023

Writer: Stewart Abbott, A Wild LifeStewart Abbott, A Wild Life

This was our first trip to Middleton Lakes and it didn't disappoint. Even though it was early March we still saw some great birds. Our target for the day was the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, which we didn't see, but with both Great Spotted and Green on site it wasn't too disappointing. 50 species for a 3 hour recce was very good, and with the summer visitors still to arrive this reserve could easily give a 60+ count.

I'm looking forward to taking more people around this exciting part of the midlands.

I think it is a good place for photographing birds too, especially water birds, as you can get really low for those eye level shots

I went on my first trip to Middleton Lakes with DBT 4th June 2023. Fantastic site with wetlands, meadows and woodland. Saw barn owl, hobby, kestrel, various water birds and warblers, lots of swifts and heard cuckoo. A group of busy young nuthatch gave us up close viewing. Lots of wildflowers to see too.
